Challenge Accepted: Becoming Paintings — an Interview with Artist Samantha Jorgensen

When the coronavirus threw us all into pandemic mode, museums all over the world called at-home creatives to arms, or well — household items. The Getty Museum, the MET, the Rijksmuseum, and the Louvre amongst others encouraged self-isolated people worldwide to recreate artworks at home. And, thankfully the Internet and individuals did not disappoint. One of these individuals was California-based Painter Samantha Jorgensen.

Seeing Sam’s brilliant recreations on her Instagram page (@SamJRose) made me want to share her work and have a conversation about her process, how self-distancing has impacted her day-to-day as an artist, and what advice she might offer to those who don’t consider themselves creative.

With items like sheets, a French press, and the coronavirus-era-coveted toilet paper, Sam Jorgensen has thus far created works by Whistler, Cézanne, Judith Leyster, Georges de La Tour, Arcimboldo, and more.
