Should you skip the small talk? Whether or not you dread or dig small talk, you may want to engage more in this form of conversing.

Reasons to engage in small talk:

  • You can meet new friends
  • It can be fun
  • It can help pass the time if you’re waiting for public transportation or working at a public-facing job
  • You can potentially network
  • You have more opportunities to smile
  • You can meet cool or interesting people
  • It can make for interesting stories
  • You can work jaw muscles with the act of talking
  • It’s a good way to connect with others if you’re otherwise isolated
